Thousand Steps Maps & Destination Info
Built in the 1930s by workers seeking a safer route to the quarry above Jack’s Narrows, the Thousand Steps trail offers a steep and storied climb through local history. Numbered steps along the way mark your progress and provide motivation as you ascend to the famed 1,000 steps — plus an extra 37 for good measure. This trail forms part of the 80-mile Standing Stone Trail. We will be joined by George Conrad, President of the Standing Stone Trail Club, who will share insights into the area’s rich history and unique ecology.
Parking Information: A long, gravel parking area along the side of Route 22. Trailhead is located at the eastern end of the parking area.
What To Expect: Climbing from Route 22 to the top of Thousand Steps is steep and difficult, but beautiful views and history await you at the top! The descent can be equally difficult; a walking stick or trekking poles are recommended to help maintain balance in each direction.
Time: Participants should plan to be out for 3–4 hours, though the duration may be longer depending on the needs of the group.
