About This Destination Dry Hollow, often referred to as “Scotia West,” is a 1,271 acre area recently added to Rothrock State Forest and contains several Natural Heritage Areas. Dry Hollow, and its neighbor the Scotia Gamelands, is one of the largest remaining patches of pitch pine-scrub oak barrens habitat in the state and supports 26 species of plants and animals listed as critically-impaired in the state. The conservation of this region is a key focus of ClearWater for its cultural significance, ecological importance, and connectivity to the surrounding forests. Explore a popular 3.6 mile hiking loop in this area, or park near the tower and explore shorter sections of the Mid-State and Old Laurel Run Trails. About This Destination **Please See directions and parking info. below if attending an event!** The Little Flat Fire Tower, a memorable landmark along the Mid-State Trail, was constructed in the mid-1900's to help spot wildfires in the state forest. Explore a popular 3.6 mile hiking loop in this area, or park near the tower and explore shorter sections of the Mid-State and Old Laurel Run Trails. Depending on the season, blooming mountain laurel, blueberry bushes, fragrant areas of fern, mushrooms, and massive rhododendrons await you in this awe-inspiring area of forest. The base of the tower is a lovely picnic spot the area also boasts a multitude of divergent trails to explore. Schedule for Sunday, September 25 Guided hikes at 1 and 3 p.m. (1.85 miles, moderately difficult) 🥾🌲 Join Bridget Whyte, Centred Outdoors Adventure Coordinator for guided walk to the fire tower while learning about the natural features of the immediate area and entire region. There will be an optional opportunity to hike along a portion of the Mid State Trail to a beautiful overlook, for a total hike length of 1.85 miles. Wellness activity: "Leaf Me Alone" Nature Journaling with Ann Taylor-Schmidt (drop in anytime between 1 and 4 p.m.) 📝🍁Focusing on the natural world is meditative and renewing. Let’s do that with this wellness exercise focusing your thoughts on a specific tree and its leaves; describing them on paper with words, numbers, drawings, tracings and/or impressions; then, writing your questions to help you discover more later or writing about what’s on your mind – downloading it to help you untangle some feelings. You can focus on your own wellness, when you focus-in on nature.
